Notes for people with allergies
Tight sleep – despite mites and pollenDuvets made by Centa-Star finally give people with allergies a refreshing night’s sleep
Read useful tips and find the right products for the different allergies:
Dust mite allergy
Up to half a million mites can hide in a single pillow. People with a dust mite allergy do not react to the animals themselves, but to their faecal droppings, with reactions ranging all the way to asthma attacks and respiratory distress. At least 5 % of the population suffer from dust mite allergy, but numbers are growing. For a long time, the only relief for dust mite allergy were encasings or bedding with a biocide finishing. But since 2017, Centa-Star has had the solution for people with dust mite allergy: AllergoProtect – the bedding that attracts allergens like a magnet.
Fold back your duvet
Mites like warm and moist environments. Always fold back your duvet in the morning, shake up your pillow and allow your mattress to dry thoroughly. This delays the growth of the mites.
The right duvet
Mites are to be found in any bed because it’s warm and moist there, creating ideal living conditions for the tiny creatures. Choose a duvet that won’t make you sweat to remove the conditions that mites need to live.
Wash regularly
Wash you bedding at least every four weeks, or if you wake up with a blocked nose.
Mite-proof
Choose mite-proof or allergen-proof bedding and use a mattress protector. If you decide to use AllergoProtect, you won’t need mite-proof bedding or encasings at all.
Pollen allergy
Pollen allergy is the most common allergy in Germany, with about 25 % of the population suffering from the allergy, also known as hay fever. The symptoms can range from mild to severe. The most effective protection is to avoid allergens, but this is easier said than done. But in your bedroom, there are a few things you can do to show pollen the door, or rather the window.
Proper airing
If you live in an urban area, you should air your bedroom in the morning when the pollen count is normally at its lowest. In rural areas, you should air until midnight. You can also use the time during and after a rain shower.
Wash your duvet and pillow regularly
Wash your bedding regularly, and once a week during “your” pollen’s high season. Shake out your pillow and duvet every morning and let your mattress dry.
Pollen-free to bed
Have a shower and wash out the pollen from your hair before going to bed. Do not change your clothes in the bedroom and do not leave the clothes you wore throughout the day in the bedroom, as this will bring pollen near to your bed. The best time for vacuum cleaning is just before you go to bed. People with allergies are particularly recommended to get a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter.
The right duvet
Since people with pollen allergies wash their duvet more frequently, we recommend a duvet from our fibre collections, which can be washed at higher temperatures than a down duvet.
Allergy to animal hair
After pollen and house dust mite allergies, the third most common allergy in Germany affects about 10 % of people who own animals. The symptoms are very similar to those of hay fever, which is why the strategies to avoid the allergens are also similar.
No pets in the bedroom
Do not allow your pets on your bed, particularly if you are allergic to cat or dog hair.
The right duvet
We advise people suffering from a pet allergy to get a fibre duvet, because duvets filled with down, sheep’s wool, camel hair or other animal fibres could also lead to allergic reactions in sensitive people.
No dust catchers
Avoid having carpets, rugs or upholstered furniture in your bedroom. You should regularly vacuum and mop the floor. By the way, regularly repainting your bedroom or changing the wallpaper might also help.
No animal hair
Extend the consistent avoidance of pet hair to your entire bedroom: no cowhide rugs, no furs in the wardrobe, and don’t forget to store your angora scarf somewhere else.
