Allergy-friendly duvets & pillows for a healthy night's sleep

We never use our duvets and pillows alone or as a couple. Rather, we spend our nights together with millions of dust mites, which also feel at home in our beds. This is completely harmless for most people, but dust mites are a problem for allergy sufferers. It is not only mites, but also pollen and animal hair that make life difficult for some allergy sufferers. Fortunately, the causes of allergy symptoms can be reduced with a few measures and the right bedding for allergy sufferers to ensure restful and healthy sleep. But what measures help, what features should allergy duvets and pillows have and which ones are recommended for different allergies?

The following guide offers you tips for allergy sufferers and information on special bedding that can be useful for allergy sufferers when dealing with their dust mite, pollen or animal hair allergy.

Dust mite allergy

Up to half a million dust mites can hide in a single pillow. Allergy sufferers do not react to the animals directly, but to their excretions. In individual cases, the reactions can even lead to asthmatic attacks with shortness of breath. Health experts estimate that around five to ten percent of the population suffer from a dust mite allergy, in addition to other allergies – such as to animal hair and pollen. For a long time, only encasings and allergy bedding containing biocides helped with dust mite allergies. Since 2017, however, Centa-Star has had a better solution for dust mite allergy sufferers: AllergoProtect® – the bedding that attracts allergens like a magnet.

Make the bed

Mites like it warm and moist. Therefore, turn back the duvet every morning, fluff your pillow and give the mattress time to dry. This will delay the growth of mites.

Regular washing

Wash your bedding at least every four weeks – but at the latest as soon as you wake up in the morning with a swollen nose.

The right duvet

Mites can be found in every bed, because warmth and moisture are ideal living conditions for the little arachnids. Therefore, choose a duvet under which you do not sweat too much. This will deprive the mites of their most important source of life.

Mite-proof

Choose mite-proof or allergen-proof bed linen and use a mattress topper.
Note: If you opt for AllergoProtect®, you can do without mite-proof bed linen and encasings. Centa-Star offers special duvets and pillows for allergy sufferers.

Our recommendation for dust mite allergy sufferers: AllergoProtect®

The AllergoProtect® product trio consisting of a duvet, pillow and mattress topper for allergy sufferers ensures healthy sleeping comfort. Our special bedding for allergy sufferers has a negatively charged finish that attracts the positively charged allergens of dust mites – similar to a magnet. With every 60° wash, the allergens are released from the cover and filling and the binding capacity of the bedding is fully restored. This property remains and renews itself to its full level with every wash. AllergoProtect® is the world’s first clinically tested bedding of its kind for allergy sufferers.

Pollen allergy

Pollen allergy is the most common form of allergy in this country. Around 25 percent of the population suffer from the condition also known as hay fever. The symptoms can range from mild to severe. Avoiding allergens offers the most effective protection. Allergy sufferers know that this is easier said than done. However, there are good ways to keep pollen out of the door or window, especially in the bedroom.

Adapted ventilation

If you live in the city, it is best to air your bedroom early in the morning, as the pollen load in the outside air is usually at its lowest at this time. In rural areas, on the other hand, you should ventilate late in the evening until midnight. In general, the time during and after a rain shower is particularly suitable.

Pollen-free to bed

Take a shower before going to bed to remove the pollen from your hair and skin. Do not change your clothes in the bedroom. Do not keep clothes worn during the day in the bedroom so that pollen does not get near your bed. Regular vacuuming is essential; a vacuum cleaner with an allergy filter is recommended for allergy sufferers.

Wash duvets and pillows regularly

The following applies to both special allergy duvets and pillows as well as conventional bedding: wash your bedding regularly – preferably weekly during the high pollen season. Shake out your pillows and duvets thoroughly every morning and allow the mattress to dry.

The right duvet

As pollen allergy sufferers wash their duvet more frequently, we recommend using a duveet from our fibre collections. These can also be washed at higher temperatures. Our special pillows and duvets for allergy sufferers (AllergoProtect®) are also suitable and also reduce mite exposure.

Recommendation for pollen allergy sufferers: Vital Plus with continuous hollow fibres

Vital Plus offers allergy sufferers extremely hard-wearing duvets and pillows filled with TREVIRA Superloft Plus continuous filament hollow fibre. Vital Plus can be washed at 60 °C and machine-dried. The duvets and pillows keep their shape for years and remain as soft and cuddly as on the first day.

Animal hair allergy

The common term “animal hair allergy” does not mean that those affected are allergic to animal hair itself, but to certain proteins in the saliva, sweat, urine, feces or dander of the animals. In a way, the hair only serves as a transporter of the allergens, which are released into the air and from there into the airways of allergy sufferers. The so-called animal hair allergy is also caused by furless animals such as birds. However, dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs are the most common causes of allergic reactions. The third most common allergy in Germany (after pollen and house dust mites) mostly affects pet owners. The symptoms are similar to those of hay fever – which is why the avoidance strategies are also similar.

No animals in the bedroom

Don't let pets into your bedroom. This is especially true if you are allergic to cat or dog hair.

Avoid dust catchers

Avoid carpets and upholstered furniture in the bedroom. The floor should be vacuumed and damp mopped regularly. Renovating the bedroom can also help. This is especially true if pets were in the bedroom before the allergy became known. New wallpaper and/or a fresh coat of paint often work wonders. Skirting boards, joints behind them and radiators should also be thoroughly cleaned at the same time. You should completely clean furniture that you are moving aside for the renovation anyway. Also consider the backs of cupboards and similar items.

Choose matching pillows and duvets

We recommend a fibre duvet for people allergic to animal hair, as pillows and duvets made of down or other animal fibres can also cause allergic reactions in sensitive people.

No animal fibres

If you suffer from allergies, you should consistently avoid animal fibres in your entire bedroom: no carpets made of cowhide, no furs in your closet and no cuddly toys made of faux fur, alpaca or mohair wool, for example.

Our tip: use special bedding for people with animal hair allergies

If you are allergic to animal hair, all Centa-Star fibre duvets are generally suitable – because they are 100% free from animal fibres and are also easy to care for, easy to wash and suitable for the dryer.

For all animal hair allergy sufferers who do not want to do without the soft and airy feeling of natural down, we recommend Famous. Thanks to DryFill made from hydrophilic microfibre fleece, this bedding offers a heavenly soft sleeping experience that is in no way inferior to natural down. Another plus point: Famous was tested by the Hohenstein Institute in both the warm and cold temperature ranges and received a comfort rating of 1.0 in each case – the first and only fibre duvet in the world to do so.

Sleep healthier with Centa-Star duvets and pillows for allergy sufferers!
